Welcome to the PopEd Toolkit

I created the PopEd toolkit back in 1998, based on work that I had done in previous years.  At the time I had a sense of what the web could be and how interactive tools could allow facilitators to share and develop tools spontaniously.  Unfortunately, back when I first created the PopEd Toolkit this level of interaction was beyond the grasp of most community level organizations.

The very first conception of my business, OpenConcept Consulting was to develop tools to allow facilitators of social change to better learn from each other and share tools that have been successful in raising awareness.  Since that time my business has followed the needs of my clients, so did not have much opportunity to keep up with facilitation or indeed this web site.  However, in early 2006, I decided it was time to revise this old content with the CivicSpace Drupal Content Management System to see if there was still interest in community participation.

WHO ARE YOU?!

I just found your page, and want to get in touch with you - but there is no information on "you" are - ???

You've clearly put a lot of thought and work into your tool kit, the discussion forums etc, all of which I want to know more about. But there is not query function on the page - and no contact information.

I'm anchoring creation of an adult education component for the U.S. Partnership for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development - which is part of the UN Decade of the same too-long name. Given my own commitments to popular and folk education, this is the frame I envision for USP's Adult & Community Learning sector. I found your website as part of a Google search; I've been out of popular education circles for five years or so now and want to renew my sense of who else is active in the larger community.

Please get in touch with me, or let me know how to reach you.

Just say your web site and need some info. I am a member of the SISTREN Theatre Collective. Just to give you a background on us. See your site and need to know how I can access some of your games for workshop on gender issues and to carry out some training session around Popular Theatre, need some updated games.
SISTREN Theatre Collective (STC) is an independent women’s organization established in 1977 that began as a drama-in-education organization, mounting full length plays and conducting workshops about women’s issues, based on real experiences affecting women. Through drama, SISTREN confronts the public with problems facing both genders, and brings pressure to bear on the society to change negative perceptions and attitudes towards women. It also serves women’s organizations, community groups, government and non-government agencies, educational institutions, and the general public.

SISTREN operates a multi-faceted popular education programme that aims to analyse the situation of women in Jamaica, increase the awareness of gender issues, assist in the building of regional networks, encourage grassroots cultural expressions, and equip other grassroots agencies to effectively campaign for social change. SISTREN conducts workshops with all sectors of society including students, youth groups, unemployed and professional persons. Themes are varied from teenage parenthood, health and sexual violence, crime and violence to national, regional and global issues such as HIV/AIDS, housing, migration, gender, justice and economic policy. Within workshops, songs, dance and exercises are used along with drama and personal testimony. The emphasis is on collective analysis of issues and discussions of possible solutions through networking with local, regional and international organizations.

Who Am I

Hello Patricia,

This site was set up as a personal initiative to capture my experience and excitement about Popular Education. It started back in 1998 or so when I wanted to put my Ozone Depletion Workshop Kit online. After that I wanted to find a way to allow others interested in these methodologies to interact. Unfortunately, after starting off my business, OpenConcept Consulting Inc., I haven't had a lot of time to invest in developing or using these exercises.
